Civil Spelling Rights

Some collectors have noted that there's a sign in the Selma March stamp in the To Form A More Perfect Union set referring to the "Edmund Pettus Bridge" — but it's actually spelled Edmund Pettis.

These stamps are based on contemporary art of the events depicted.

The misspelling of the bridge's name "is an artful idiosyncrasy on the part of the artist," USPS spokeswoman Frances Frazier told The Virtual Stamp Club. "In the context of the civil rights stamps, where the overall selections reflect highly personal interpretations of these symbolic events, these kinds of artistic expressions are entirely appropriate. The Postal Service consulted several sources in the process of developing these stamps, including a living civil rights icon."

More discussion on these 10 civil rights stamps can be found here.
