April's New Stamps
The United States this month issues stamps honoring playwright Thornton
Wilder and Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg. May shapes up as a big month,
even if you don't count the Pacific 97 issues, with Bugs Bunny and World of
Dinosaurs coming out before the big International show.
Canada notes the Quebec City Horticultural Fair with a Quebec in Bloom
stamp. France adds another Art History stamp, this one commemorating the
work of Bernard Moninot, and 4 National Parks series, too. There's also one
for the show Europa 97, featuring "Le Chat Botté."
Australia weighs in with a "Nature of Australia-Wetlands" set of four,
featuring "the Saltwater Crocodile with the Kangkong (a spreading floating
vine), the Northern Dwarf Tree-frog with Red Lily, the Big Greasy Butterfly
with a waterlily and the Kakadu Park itself." The stamps are available in a
minisheet, on a first day cover with flower cancellations and on Maximum Cards.
Twenty countries, from Antigua to Zambia and all represented by
Inter-Governmental Philatelic Corporation, issued stamps to help raise
relief aid for the survivors of the Chernobyl nuclear accident.
