February 26-27, 2000:
How to discourage collectors.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
I just got back from a really fun stamp show, AmeriStamp
Expo 2000 in Portland, Oregon, a part of the country that
doesn't get enough big shows. The local committee did a
great job, collectors flew in from all over the country,
and the local press covered the show and brought in
still more people.
The only thing that went wrong was the Postal Service.
Let me be clear: The Postal Service HEADQUARTERS likes
collectors, and supports big stamp shows. It helps sponsor
at least four of them each year, and spends tens of
thousands of dollars promoting both the shows and stamp
collecting.
It's the local postal people who blew it. They had an
undecorated table at the back of this show. The only
sign said "cancellations here," but there was no mention
that stamps were being sold. They packed up early each
day, and didn't come at all on Sunday.
Post office booths at other regional shows on the West
Coast sell thousands of dollars' worth of stamps, I'm
told. Not this one.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
