The Never Ending Series
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
The newest entries to the Great Americans series of
definitive stamps, which began in 1980, have a completely
different look and style to their designs. The two new
stamps -- the 33-cent Claude Pepper and 10-cent Joseph
Stilwell -- cover denominations that already have stamps
in the series.
Commemorative stamps are usually hot topics and well-known
people. Definitives are the workhorses of any country's
stamps: They're not flashy and are meant to be in use for
a long time. In the U-S, that's usually been about a decade...
but the Great Americans are now entering their third decade.
Already there are three 20-cent stamps, two five-cent stamps,
and so on.
Maybe it's time to declare the Great Americans Series over,
and call this a new series. Let's see -- we've had Famous Americans...Prominent Americans... Maybe we can call these
Distinguished Americans? Celebrated Americans? Good Enough
For A Stamp But Not Good Enough For A Commemorative Americans?
And that's stamp collecting this week.
