The Postal Service Loves Lucy
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
We've been told by a pretty good source within the Postal
Service that next year's Legends of Hollywood stamp will
honor Lucille Ball.
Of course, last year, we got early word that the Hollywood
Legend would be Edward G. Robinson, and we were right...but
not before the Postal Service changed its mind a couple of
times.
Lucille Ball is an interesting choice for a couple of
reasons. First, just last year, her television show "I Love
Lucy" was one of the subjects for the Celebrate the Century
1950s stamps. She and husband Desi Arnaz were pictured. If
she's on next year's Hollywood stamp, that's two in three
years.
Also, the other Legends of Hollywood subjects -- among them
Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and Alfred Hitchcock -- were all
known for MOVIES, not television. While Lucille Ball did
have a pretty good career in movies -- and supposedly was
even considered for Scarlet O'Hara in "Gone With The Wind"
-- the reason we love Lucy is television, not movies.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
