September 23-24, 2000:
Stamps that rate.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
While it's not certain exactly WHAT the independent Postal
Rate Commission will recommend in the next month or so, it's
likely there WILL be some changes in the mailing fees next
year.
So the Postal Service has developed a number of new stamp
designs to cover the new rates. These will be among the first
stamps issued in 2001.
They don't have the alphabet in place of the numbers, possibly
because the next letter would have been I, making these the
"I-rate" stamps.
The new stamp for letters will be a stunning photo of the
Statue of Liberty, printed in blue. It will first be issued
without a denomination, then later with the new rate...which
probably will be 34 cents. There will also be a block of four
lilies, and a pair of apple and orange stamps.
The new postcard rate stamp will feature a bust of George
Washington, while the additional-ounce stamp will be something
I'm calling the Neon Buffalo. An art-deco golden eagle stamp
will carry two-ounce letters.
They look pretty good.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
