October 7-8, 2000:
Next year's Canadian stamps.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Last month, Canada Post announced its program for next year.
Then, another subject popped up that's likely to be added: A
stamp for the charismatic late prime minister Pierre Trudeau.
As the U-S does for presidents, Canada generally honours its
deceased prime ministers within a year after their deaths.
Trudeau's 81st birthday would have been later this month, but
that's too soon to design, print and distribute a stamp. An
advisory committee also has to approve the subject. A Canada
Post spokesman tells me a Trudeau stamp is likely, but not
definite.
Among the definite subjects, sports dominates the 2001 program,
including the World Figure Skating Championships, the Toronto
Blue Jays...amateur athletics...and the Y-M-C-A. There will
also be another set of Hockey Heroes.
Other stamps will include the Year of the Snake to mark the
Lunar New Year...Hot Air Balloons...birds...veterans ...and
ten tourist attractions.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
