Fabulous Finds
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Every collector, of stamps or anything else, dreams of it:
Paying practically nothing for something that's worth a lot
of money.
While that bolt of lightning doesn't strike often, it IS
possible to buy something cheap that's worth significantly
more than you paid for it.
For example, at a major stamp show recently, the postal
clerks were selling -- at face value -- double-transfer
errors of an eight-dollar souvenir sheet. Value: About
125 dollars. They also had scarce tagging varieties.
Me, I wouldn't know a double-transfer from a bus transfer.
The key here is knowledge -- and paying attention.
One frequent production mistake is that the perforations,
the little holes that help you separate the stamps, aren't
there. Or perhaps there's a color missing.
So it pays to carefully examine the stamps you buy at the
post office. If something doesn't look quite right, look it
up, then check it with an experienced collector or dealer.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
