April 21-22, 2001:
Finding Stamp Shows.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Few small cities and towns have stamp stores any more --
Main Street doesn't get enough traffic and malls are too
expensive.
Instead, in-person retail philatelic business has moved to
stamp shows, which can range from amateur events similar
to flea markets with half a dozen dealers to slick
professional programs that look like trade shows and have
dozens of dealers, exhibits and seminars. Most areas of the
country have some sort of stamp show a few times a year.
The problem is finding out when and where.
If you subscribe to a stamp collecting publication, it
probably has a show calendar in it. If your local paper
still has a stamp column, it tells when there are shows
in your area.
Otherwise, your best bet may be the Internet: The American
Philatelic Society has a calendar at stamps-dot-org, and
there's one at virtual-stamp-club-dot-com.
Or call Linn's Stamp News at 800-448-7293 and ask for a
sample copy of the paper.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
