A tall, silent stamp?


The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
 
Monday is the hundredth anniversary of the birth of film star 
Gary Cooper, winner of two Academy Awards plus an honorary 
one, and a popular figure in Hollywood's Golden Era. He 
starred in classics such as "High Noon," "Sergeant York," 
"Beau Geste" and "Pride of the Yankees."


Why would I think he's a likely subject for one of the Legends 
of Hollywood stamps? It's just a hunch on my part -- I have no 
inside information -- but actor Karl Malden is on a panel 
discussion Monday about Cooper. They worked in a 1959 picture 
together, too.


And Malden is a member of the Citizen Stamp Advisory Committee, 
which helps choose stamp subjects. He was a good friend of 
Lucille Ball, who is this year's Legends of Hollywood subject...
and of Edward G. Robinson, who was last year's.


The Committee already has decided most of next year's stamps, 
and is working on Two Thousand Three. So next year's Legend 
of Hollywood already has been chosen. Maybe it's Cooper...
maybe not.


But it's still fun to guess!
