A Stamp for 9-1-1?


The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
 
New York's U-S Senators, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Charles 
Schumer, are proposing a surcharged stamp be issued to mark 
the recent terrorist attacks, and the heroism of so many people. 
They're not alone.


Another suggestion is for FOUR stamps, one for each group of 
rescuers: Police, fire, medical and volunteers.


There's already a procedure in place to set up surcharged, or 
semi-postal, stamps -- ones that cost more than the price of 
postage with the extra money going to charity. The next one's 
scheduled for next year. The time for suggestions is over.


But if Congress says do it....the Postal Service will do it. 


One of the stamps already planned for next year was to include 
the World Trade Center in its design. I'm told it's being 
changed.


And it may be awhile before you see the new stamps issued this 
past Thursday for the new rates. They would have been distributed 
last week, but with the disruption of mail service, that took a 
back seat to moving the regular mail.
