Variations On A Theme
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Quite a few subjects this year will be commemorated on stamps
by more than one country.
Many of the nations issuing stamps for the Year of the Horse
are Asian, but not all: Count the United States and Canada
among them. That's because Lunar New Year stamps are popular
not only in the countries that issue them, but also among
collectors in Asia.
Austria and Germany are two of the countries marking the switch
to the euro as their currency, while other countries gear up
for the World Cup soccer tournament.
Many European countries each year issue stamps on a single theme,
and this year's Europa subject is The Circus. Scandinavian
countries have picked "Contemporary Art" as their theme for Two
Thousand Two's Nordic stamps.
Another multi-country subject this year will be Queen Elizabeth's
50th anniversary on the throne.
Several countries note the Winter Olympics, being held next month
in Salt Lake City...including the U-S, which issues a block of four
stamps this Tuesday.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
