Keeping it topical.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

A stamp collection organized by subject is called a "topical"
collection -- that is, the stamps all relate to a specific
topic. Some of the subjects collected on stamps are trains,
sports, birds, even STAMPS on stamps.

Many people collect something relating to their own lives --
their occupations, for example, or their home state or another
hobby.

It's the fastest-growing part of stamp collecting, probably
because the collectors already know quite a bit about their
topics, whether it's pharmacy, submarines or cows.

You can make a topical collection very broad -- such as
"Music" -- or very narrow, such as "trombones on stamps."
That allows you to control somewhat how much time and money
you put into your collection.

There are national clubs for just about every subject -- did
we mention Meso-American Archaeology? -- and one big
organization, the American Topical Association. You can find
information about these groups at stamps-dot-org.

And that's stamp collecting this week.

I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
