February 23-24, 2002:
Not Dead Yet.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Issued just 10 days before the terrorism attacks, after years
of lobbying by Muslim-Americans, some postal clerks and customers
refused to use the Eid stamp.
Other holiday stamps are reissued with each new rate change, but
the Postal Service said sales are the key. Muslim-American groups
pushed their members to buy the stamps, and now, says postal
official Terry McCaffrey...
"It has become part of our holiday celebrations series, and, like
Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, it will be reissued for the new rate change."
RUNS: :08
Politicial correctness may have played a role in the decision, but
the Cinco de Mayo stamp, representing the Hispanic holiday, was
discontinued after its sales petered out.
Meanwhile, some stamp collectors are wondering whether the Hanukkah
and Kwanzaa stamps might get new designs this time around. This
year's religious Christmas stamp will be the Jan Gossaert Madonna
and Child painting at the Art Institute of Chicago originally
scheduled for Two Thousand.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
