Three in a row.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
The Postal Service usually likes to space out its stamp issues, to get
maximum publicity...but in mid-September, three sets of stamps are all
coming out in three days.
On Friday, September 13th, it's American Bats. The next day, Women
Journalists, and then on Sunday the 15th, Irving Berlin.
Why the log jam? Because there was a rate change earlier this summer. No one
wanted new stamps that wouldn't be useful in a few weeks...so many stamps
got pushed back until now.
Irving Berlin's birthday, for example, was in May...but his family wanted to
wait on the stamp. It will be issued during the Broadway-on-Broadway
celebration.
Why bats?
"Kids love bats"
RUNS :01
says chief stamp developer Terry McCaffrey, and the U-S usually issues
kids-related stamps for National Stamp Collecting Month, which is October.
The women journalist stamps -- Nellie Bly, Ida Tarbell, Marguerite Higgins
and Ethel Payne -- are being issued at the Society of Professional
Journalists' convention.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
