March 10-11, 2001:
A Treasure Trove of Trivia.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
I think I'm a pretty good student of U-S history, but some
of the new rate-change stamps taught me a little more about
America.
For instance, the new three-ounce stamp is of Sen. Hattie
Caraway. Who? She was first woman elected to the Senate,
in 1932, from Arkansas.
Several new stamps, including a Bison and a George
Washington bust, came out in Wall, South Dakota, home of
the famous Wall Drug Store. Famous? I have to admit I'd
never heard of it. It opened during the Depression, and
offered free ice water to thirsty travelers heading across
the Badlands. It became part of American folklore.
Did you know that Mount McKinley in Alaska is North
America's highest mountain? Or that the Dakota Indians
believed the Buffalo had special healing powers?
Other new stamps early this year will make us more aware
of Diabetes and its symptoms...and of some of the great
magazine illustrators of the last century. <..and that
it's only been a hundred years since the first community
college was founded.>
Collecting stamps yields all sorts of fun information.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
