More than just Christmas

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Every year or two, there are new Christmas stamps at the post office, but the same stamps
for Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. The Hanukkah stamp, showing candles, was first issued 8 years ago,
and has been reissued at each of the new postal rates, but with the same design. The same
goes for Kwanzaa, which debuted a year later.

Jewish and African-American groups have been asking for new designs, but--

"Because they're smaller quantities and they're not like the Christmas stamps with all the
Christmas cards, we felt that we would wait."
RUNS :07

Still, chief stamp designer Terry McCaffrey admits it was time for completely new artwork.
The new Hanukkah stamp shows a dreydl, the spinning top children play with, and Kwanzaa
shows seven figures in colorful robes, representing the seven days of the African-American
holiday and its seven principles.

There's also a new Madonna and Child stamp this year, and, next month, a box of four
ornaments.

And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
