Giants of the Arts
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
The timing is just coincidence, but the U-S has two new stamps a week apart for a top
author and a top songwriter.
Neither is exactly a household name -- but their works are.
MUSIC: "Somewhere Over The Rainbow"
Establish :03 and under, quick fade out
Yip Harburg wrote the lyrics for the music of "The Wizard Of Oz," as well as much of the
dialogue in the classic movie. He also wrote the 1940s Broadway musical "Finian's Rainbow,"
an allegory about race relations in America disguised as a tale about leprechauns, as well
as what was practically the anthem for the Great Depression.
MUSIC: "Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?"
Establish :03 and under, quick fade
Robert Penn Warren may be best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "All The King's
Men," but he was also the first poet laureate of the United States and won two other
Pulitzers in a career that stretched six decades. He is the only author to have won the
Pulitzer for both fiction and poetry.
And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.

Described by some as Broadway's social conscience, Harburg was blacklisted in the 1950s.

The movie made from "All The King's Men" won three Oscars; a new version is coming out
this year.
