In Pursuit of Publicity
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
The Postal Service likes to release stamps at big non-stamp events, in the hopes of garnering
some publicity. Nothing wrong with that -- it's good for stamp collecting as well as sales.
But sometimes it backfires. Last summer's Arthur Ashe stamp was issued at the U-S Open, and
maybe a handful of people showed up.
The Postal Service has said it would like to issue this year's Comic Book Heroes stamps at a
comics convention. A logical choice is the huge San Diego Comic Con International, but that's
the problem, says cartoonist and stamp collector Dave Bennett. It's huge.
"With over 100,000 people there, and hundreds of seminars and panel discussions and celebrity
show-ups, it would just get lost in the shuffle."

Matt Murray, head of the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art of New York, says there's an
alternative.
"We'd love to host the first day ceremony ... New York is the birthplace of both comics and
comic books."

We'll see what happens.
And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
