Big Deal About Little Stamps
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
The workhorse stamps that cover specific rates usually aren't flashy and don't get much
attention. Lately, that's been changing.
The 23-cent Wilma Rudolph stamp was very popular, getting a lot of notice from the
African-American community and track-and-field fans two years ago.
And now, the Postal Service has produced stamps for its two- and three-ounce rates honoring
two pioneers in the successful battle against polio, Doctors Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin.
Had there been just one stamp for ONE of these men, it probably wouldn't get as much notice,
but pairing them -- especially given the mild controversy over which one should get credit --
has generated more interest.
The artwork for this Distinguished Americans series also helps: It's by Mark Summers, the same
artist who does those distinctive pictures for Barnes and Noble bookstores using the
"scratchboard" technique.
Unlike commemoratives, these stamps should be in your post office for the next several years.
And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
