Strange Scheduling
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
It's feast or famine with the schedule for new U-S stamps this year.
This week, three will be released: Ella Fitzgerald on Wednesday, Oklahoma Centennial on
Thursday, and Love and Kisses, which shows the Hershey's candy, on Saturday.
Then there's nothing scheduled for a month, and a set of stamps for the International
Polar Year. A few more weeks, and there's a Henry Wadsworth Longfellow stamp, and then
nearly TWO months before any other commemoratives.
How come?
Well, most of this year's new stamps are being held back until after the all-but-certain
rate change in May. The Postal Reform Act passed last month may help prevent FUTURE rate
changes, but it won't stop this one. And, since no one wants to buy a stamp with the old
rate, why issue them?
Ella Fitzgerald and Love and Kisses have to come out now, for Black History Month and
Valentine's Day. The Oklahoma Centennial people wanted their stamp issued early in the year.
Everything else can wait.
