Scouting for stamps
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
This year marks the centennial of the Boy Scouts -- founded by Robert Baden-Powell in
Nineteen-Oh-Seven. Many countries, including Britain, where it started, are issuing
stamps.
The fortieth and fiftieth anniversaries of the Boy Scouts of America were commemorated,
but a stamp for the U-S centennial three years from now is not as certain. Times have
changed.
First, the current rules say no stamps for organizations. On the other hand, such rules
are .... finagled all the time, such as the stamp this year for the centennial of Hershey's
Kisses, even though stamps for commercial products aren't allowed. The Postal Service can
get around honoring the scouting organization by issuing a stamp for tents or hiking while
wearing green clothing or something.
A bigger problem may be the recent controversy over whether homosexuals can serve as scout
leaders. That lost the Boy Scouts of America a lot of financial support. Could it also cost
them a stamp in Two Thousand Ten?
