Defining Definitives
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Definitive stamps aren't flashy, but they're the workhorses of the postal service
stamp drawer: They're often issued in denominations like one cent, two cents, and
so on -- useful when there's a rate change or an odd charge . They're usually
smaller and around much longer than commemoratives.
They're often issued in series, a single theme and similar designs. One of the
classics was the Presidential series of the 1930s, with the presidents in order.
Washington was the one-cent, Adams the two, Lincoln the 16, and so on. It was so
influential that even Dana Gioia, chairman of the National Endowment of the Arts,
can say
"I still know the presidents in order because of the Prexy series."
RUNS :03
Currently, the Postal Service is giving us Distinguished Americans and American
Design stamps for specific rates...and, occasional stamps featuring plants, animals,
birds and, of course, flags.
They're the stamps you see most often on your mail, even junk mail.
