No butts about it.
The Stamp Collecting Report. I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Take a careful look at the Bette Davis stamp that just came out. It's a glamorous portrait
of the actress, based on a publicity photo taken for what many consider her best film,
"All About Eve."
"Fasten your seatbelts. It's going to be a bumpy night."
RUNS :04
On the stamp, her gloved right hand is held in front of her, and her two fingers are
raised... Almost as if she were holding a cigarette.
She probably was. Bette Davis was one of Hollywood's most-famous smokers. Almost every
picture shows her with a cigarette. There's even a photo of her smoking taken after she
suffered a stroke and had had breast cancer surgery.
There are photos from that All About Eve publicity session showing her with and without
cigarettes. The Postal Service says its artist used a photo without one.
But the Postal Service DID remove cigarettes from its portraits of James Dean...Audrey
Hepburn... Thornton Wilder and others.
I guess smoke gets in their eyes.
