A Natural Selection For A Stamp Subject
The Stamp Collecting Report. I'm Lloyd de Vries.
While the U-S is celebrating the bicentennials of Edgar Allan Poe and Abraham Lincoln this
year.. Britain is commemorating the birth of naturalist Charles Darwin -- born the same day
as Lincoln.
This year also marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of his book "On The Origin of
the Species," which sold out its first printing. His theory of evolution says all species of
life arose from common ancestors, interlocking like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.
And, in one version, Britain's six stamps are SHAPED like the pieces of a puzzle...to show
that the different areas of Darwin's studies are connected.
The six designs show Darwin himself..a marine iguana representing zoology...Galapagos
[Notes:gah-LAP-a-gus] Finches representing ornithology...a Pacific atoll [Notes:AAAA-tahl]
for geology...a Bee Orchid for Botany...and an orangutan for anthropology. There's also a
miniature sheet of 4 stamps showing some of the unique wildlife of the Galapagos Islands,
with a map from Darwin's expedition there.
