Should the Postal Service Be Prepared?
The Stamp Collecting Report. I'm Lloyd de Vries.
We're about to get first word from the U-S Postal Service about what stamps it plans to
issue next year. Stamp collectors are already speculating on the subjects... And one that
keeps cropping up is the Boy Scouts.
The scouting movement began in 1908, and a number of countries issued stamps last year
commemorating that centennial. The U-S in the past, however, has honored the founding of
the Boy Scouts OF AMERICA two years later. There were stamps for the 40th and 50th
anniversaries.
But by the 75th anniversary in 1985, the Boy Scouts were only one of 4 stamps for youth
groups.
And since then, the percentage of boys becoming scouts is way down.
More importantly, Scouting has come under fire for its ban on openly-gay men as adult
leaders.
Many organizations have distanced themselves from the Scouts. Will the Postal Service be
one of them?
We'll find out.
