A chase down Memory Lane
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
The recent 20 Early Television Memories stamps were given an official launch
ceremony in Hollywood...appropriate enough...but some communities feel a special
affinity to one or more of the shows and performers depicted on the stamps.
For example, the Los Angeles Police Department held its own ceremony that day for
"Dragnet" and there was a special postmark. The same was true in Red Skelton's
home town of Vincennes, Indiana. There was a ceremony and postmark for "The
Honeymooners" three days later, in Brooklyn, where the show was set.
Not every show had a hometown celebration. Some had ceremonies but no postmarks.
And there were several towns with both but no real relationship to the shows.
Collectors and fans have 30 days from the date of the postmark to submit
pre-stamped envelopes and cards for these "pictorial cancels." Tracking them all
down is hard -- there's not really a single comprehensive source. You'll find
some on virtual-stamp-club-dot-com... "The Postmark Pursuit."
And that's stamp collecting this week. I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
