Artist to the stars.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I’m Lloyd de Vries.
Paul Calle has died at the age of 82.
As The New York Times said, his best known work of art is the size of a postage stamp –
because it IS a postage stamp. He designed the 1969 Man on the Moon stamp, issued just
a few months after Apollo 11 landed.
Calle was a member of a special NASA program for artists, but beyond that, HE was chosen
to chronicle the Apollo 11 crew’s preparations for their mission – the only media person
with such access.
He designed other space stamps, and was also responsible for nearly 40 other stamp
subjects, from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to Aging to Carousel Animals.
Calle did more than just postage stamps, of course. Besides space, he had a fondness for
Western America subjects. He illustrated books, and he WROTE one on using a pencil in art.
[Besides leaving us some of the best stamp designs of the 20thcentury, Calle also leaves
us a son who designs stamps – AND collects them.]
But it’s through his stamp designs that Paul Calle will be remembered, and appreciated,
forever.
