New rates, new stamps
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries
With the announcement earlier this year that the U-S Postal Service is increasing some
of its secondary rates in April, the agency is getting ready to issue a number of stamps
for the new rates.
First, the basic price of mailing a letter is NOT going up. The increases are for things
like additional ounces for heavier mail, postcards, newspapers and magazines, and parcels.
The new stamps include a 20-cent George Washington stamp. The Father of our Country has
been on more stamps than anyone else....but there hasn't been one in post offices in years.
There will be a new postcard, showing a common tern -- that's a bird -- and a new airmail
stamp showing Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota. A three-ounce stamp will show Oveta
Culp Hobby, the first Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare and the first commander
of the Women's Army Corps.
All these issues were first reported by Jay Bigalke in Linn's Stamp News. There's no
confirmation yet...but he's usually right.
