On The Brink.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries
The U-S Postal Service is in the news a lot these days, for all the wrong reasons. Its
financial problems seem to be coming to a head.
Many stamp collectors who specialize in new U-S issues are wondering whether these
problems will affect them. The answer is yes…and no.
No, the U-S-P-S isn't going to go out of business. And it's not going to stop issuing
stamps. In fact, it has about as many stamps planned for next year as in the last
several years.
But the Postal Service isn't printing as many of each stamp, so you may have to move
quickly to get new issues. And some local supervisors don't realize how much of each
sale to a collector can be pure profit, so they take false economies and hamper stamp
sales.
One reason the Postal Service has been announcing next year's stamps on the Internet
is that it's much, much cheaper than staging an event.
Once there were half a dozen people at Postal headquarters handling publicity for
stamps full-time. Now there are just two, part-time.
Just like many of us, the Postal Service is learning to get by on less.
