Increasing Values.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Even the cheapest stamp collection just went up 25 percent in book value.

That's because the editors of the Scott postage stamp catalogues - which are the standard
in the U-S - raised their minimum value to 25 cents, up a nickel.

That means that every stamp - no matter how common or worthless -- has a catalogue value
of at least a quarter.

The editors figure it costs a dealer at least that much in time, effort and overhead to
sell a stamp.

The Scott minimum value has been 20 cents for more than a decade. With inflation, 20 cents
back then would be worth more than 32 cents today... So the increase is overdue.

Many non-collectors or casual collectors mistake catalogue value for what a collection is
actually worth. But, no, a thousand minimum-value stamps are not worth 250 dollars.

By the way, chances are your public library has a set of Scott stamp catalogues you can
check. Just remember that that twenty-five cents is a place-holder.
