Have It Your Way

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

As we get more details about next year's U-S stamps and look back at this year's, many
collectors are expressing dissatisfaction with the stamp program. The Postal Service
should have issued this, shouldn't have issued that

The only problem is... there's little agreement on what stamps should be issued.

We're told the general public likes stamps with flags and pretty pictures.

Some people like trains, cars, national parks or famous people.

In general, collectors would like more historical subjects, although not exclusively.
They'd also like fewer stamps each year — as long as THEIR favorite subjects are
honored.

Then there are the interest groups, which have little interest in stamps, except they
want one issued for their specific subject. But once their stamps are issued, they do
buy and use them.

The problem in the United States — more than in any other country — is that our
"melting pot" is made up of many different groups — religions, cultures, charities,
even geographic regions.

The United States stamp program can't satisfy everyone, not without issuing hundreds
of stamps each year, and maybe not even then.
