With a decline in the use of the mail, and the Postal Service’s financial problems, you’d
think the agency wouldn’t have much interest in stamps.
But Steve Kearney, the manager of Stamp Services, says just the opposite is true.
“We want to draw as many people as possible into a greater interest and awareness of
stamps in the U.S.” RUNS :06
Yes, Kearney admits, that means lots of pop culture on U-S stamps.
“The Postal Service ever since the Elvis stamps were issued has been doing more and more
popular culture in our stamps, but we’re doing it, I think, in a very measured and
respectful way.” RUNS :10
And there are still stamps for historical and educational subjects, such as this year’s
Poets and Statehood stamps.
“Postage is a symbol of not only the Post Office and the Postal Service, but of our
nation.” RUNS :06
Kearney says it’s important to give mailers a choice.
“A number of people love to choose stamps that fit the subject matter they’re talking
about or that represent some affiliation or interest that they have, or even that
match their stationery.” RUNS :11
