Cashing in on Christmas.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
It appears the U-S Postal Service this year will deliver a sleigh-load of Christmas stamps.
The latest Postal Bulletin, an internal publication, shows EIGHT this year.
In the beginning – 1962 – there was just one U-S Christmas stamp every year.
Some people complained a Christmas stamp violated the Separation of Church and State – so
the Post Office began issuing both religious AND secular stamps… which it calls
“contemporary,” even when they’re historical subjects.
The U-S Postal Service, as it’s now called, hasn’t issued a new religious stamp every year,
but there’s always one available.
Except these days the Postal Service seems to be trying to milk the stamp program, both for
money and for publicity. There will be a Poinsettia stamp, a Madonna and Child, a Holy
Family, an Evergreen Wreath for mail outside the U-S, and four Gingerbread Houses. You can
also throw in new stamps for Hanukkah and Kwanzaa.
Stamp collectors may not have any money left for gifts!
