Remembering J-F-K.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

The world was stunned when it learned that U-S President John F. Kennedy had been shot
and killed in 1963. Many countries issued stamps honoring him almost immediately. The U-S,
however, waited six months, until what would have been his 47th birthday.

"The 5-cent Kennedy stamp was placed on sale, officially, nationwide back on May 29th, 1964."

Wall Street broker Henry Scheuer specializes in that stamp... and says far more people obtained
souvenirs postmarked on the first day of sale than usual.

"People were so fond of Kennedy all throughout the country that they did go out and prepare
these souvenirs at the time."

The U-S later issued two more stamps — although one was in a set of ALL the presidents — and
two aerogrammes honoring him. Other countries continue to issue Kennedy stamps, especially this
year. Even today, J-F-K is a popular subject on stamps world-wide.

But there's no U-S stamp for this 50th anniversary... because the Postal Service doesn't
commemorate tragedies.
