Fun with stamps.

Last fall, the U-S Postal Service celebrated one of the most famous stamps ever, the 1918
airmail one on which the plane had been printed upside-down.  The reprints were two dollar
stamps, sold in special sheets of six.

Except the Postal People decided to have some fun, and printed one hundred of the sheets
with the airplane RIGHTSIDE-UP. The un-inverted sheets are sold at random in unmarked
packages; you won’t know until you open the package whether you have one or not.

Some dealers are paying 25-thousand dollars for one of these rare 12-dollar sheets. And
there are still more out there.

But your chances of getting one are astronomical – something like one in 22 thousand.
Collectors and others last fall were buying up these sheets, hoping to hit the jackpot.

So imagine my surprise when I got a press release recently that seemed to say  ANOTHER
hundred were going on sale.

Then I looked at the date — April Fool’s Day.

It’s the same press release that was issued six months ago. Someone at Postal Service
headquarters has a sense of humor. But at least one major mainstream publication was
fooled.
