Auction Action.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Two really interesting stamps are going on the auction block this spring.
One is the locket copy of the Inverted Jenny stamp. The second owner of the sheet of
one hundred stamps with the upside-down airplane, Colonel Edward Green, put one of the
stamps inside a glass locket, along with a normal Jenny stamp. He then gave it to his
girlfriend and future wife.
The locket goes on sale next month, and the auctioneer’s estimate is as much as a
quarter of a million dollars – but there were no takers the last two times it was
offered.
The other is the one-cent Magenta from British Guiana. Only one copy is known of this
1856 stamp, and it’s expected to fetch 10 to 20 million dollars at the June auction!
Adding to the interest about this stamp is who the previous owner was: John du Pont,
the chemical fortune heir who died prison… where he was serving a life sentence for the
murder of his friend, an Olympic wrestling coach.
His One-Cent Magenta hasn’t been exhibited for almost 30 years. The public has never
seen the Locket Jenny.
