Stolen!

Stamp collections may not be as sexy as televisions and jewelry, but they do get stolen.
There are even thieves who specialize in stamps.

That’s why the American Philatelic Society, the major national stamp collecting
organization, has a Stamp Theft Committee, which Nick Lombardi chairs.

“The first thing you do is notify your local police. File a report with them. The second
thing you do is notify the APS Stamp Theft Committee. You go online to stamps-dot-org….”

and look under the “Services” menu. [Direct link] Don’t procrastinate.

“Obviously you’re going to notify local police immediately. You might not think to
notify APS, but do it within a reasonable length of time.”

You don’t have to be a member of the A-P-S.

“But if we do recover your stamps, you’re not getting them back until you become a member
of the APS — no, I’m not serious! (laughter)   RUNS :05

Lombardi and his committee will notify dealers and others to look for  your stamps. The
really valuable ones often have certificates that identify them.

“In this one instance, we were able to recover probably half a dozen very valuable stamps,
because the collector had the original certificates and we were able to match them up with
stamps we found on websites.”  RUNS :12

But sometimes just how the stamps are grouped or displayed is enough to make a match… and
recover your stolen property.
