Hollywood’s one-two punch.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Four days after the U-S Postal Service announced that Ingrid Bergman would be the subject of this year’s Legends of Hollywood stamp, the agency announced there will also be a stamp this year for Paul Newman.
The Bergman stamp is scheduled for August 20th; Newman for September 18th. Two Legends of Hollywood stamps in one year?
No — only the actress is part of that series, not Newman. The key is in the text on Newman’s stamp: actor-philanthropist. The press release also stresses his charity work… including the food company that has donated more than 430 million dollars. He received the Motion Picture Academy’s humanitarian award.
Of course, during his long acting career, he was in some great films: “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “The Sting,” “Hud,” “The Color of Money” — everyone has a favorite. His was “Slap Shot.”
Bergman was a great actress. She won three Oscars, two Emmys, a Tony and many other awards. That’s her claim to fame… while Paul Newman could be honored just for his philanthropy... and is.
