Christmas whimsy.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

It’s been awhile since I’ve laughed out loud at a stamp design — one that was intentionally
funny, at any rate. But that’s what happened when I saw this year’s Christmas stamps from
Canada.

The domestic-rate one, in particular. It shows a moose wearing a red-and-white knit hat and
scarf, the hat nestled between its antlers. The animal has an amused look on its face.

The international-rate stamp is a polar bear, wearing a red-and cream Sherlock Holmes-style
hat, scarf and a Christmas sweater. And there’s definitely a look on his face, too.

The stamp for mail to the U-S shows a Beaver, with a jaunty red and green cap, a plaid shirt
and a sprig of mistletoe in his mouth.

The fourth Canadian Christmas stamp this year is a serious design, based on a Nativity-themed
painting from the early 16th century.

Canada, by the way, was the first country to issue a Christmas stamp, back in 18-98.
