Bringing History to Stamps
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Cheryl Ganz is one of the newest members of the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee which
helps the U-S Postal Service decide on new stamps. Her goal?
“That our postage stamp selection and designs represent our country and the best of
America.” RUNS :05
Ganz is a stamp collector and prolific writer, with a P-H-D in American History.
“I’ve been lead curator at the Smithsonian for the philatelic collections. I have a vast
knowledge about stamps and how they related to American history.” RUNS :08
Ganz joins C-SAC, as the panel is called, after some turbulent times, both for the stamps
division of the Postal Service as well as the committee itself.
“We have new leadership that looks like they’re going to be in for the long term. They’ve
got great institutional knowledge, a great skill set, a reaching-out in new ways.”
RUNS :09
Ganz says it’s a good team, and that will help the U-S stamp program.
“What I see is a program that instead of always being deadline-to-deadline is going to start
looking forward in new ways and have more opportunities for interesting planning.” RUNS :10
Members of C-SAC can’t talk about specific upcoming stamps, but...
“All of us have our areas of passion that we bring to the committee and debate and refine,
so I’m sure you’ll see things that reflect some of my interests in there.” RUNS :10
By the way, the U-S stamp program is mostly set three years in advance... so C-SAC is
already working on 2018 and 19.
