The Jewel at the Library
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Scott Tiffney is the chief librarian at the American Philatelic Research Library and the
American Philatelic Society — two major stamp collecting organizations in the U-S. But
he's not related to the Tiffany who was the first president of the A-P-S nor to the jewelers
and stained-glass artist.
"My last name's T-I-F-F-N-E-Y." RUNS :02
He comes to the A-P-R-L by way of the National Park Service.
"I sort of went around to National Parks, mostly in the Northeast, putting together their
libraries for them." RUNS: 05
One of Tiffney's priorities is streamlining how the Library handles donations.
"We get a lot of donations on a daily and weekly basis, some small, just a couple of books,
some large. We had recently 14 boxes of materials come." RUNS :09
Not every donation is added to the Library's collection. The options are—
"Either process them for resale, or use in Education and some of the other departments, or
make available to other philatelic libraries as well." RUNS :08
The A-P-S and A-P-R-L jointly publish two journals, American Philatelist mostly for A-P-S
members and the American Philatelic Literature Review for the Library, and that journal
is largely Tiffney's responsibility.
"The P-L-R is more geared toward sort of researchers who use the Library. We don't tend
to get into the more generalized, say, articles and topics." RUNS :09
Not surprisingly, Tiffney has a Master of Library Science degree, but here's something
you probably didn't know:
"Also have my Master of Arts in English Literature, with a major in Old English and
Middle English." RUNS :06
And he's from Ontario.
