Remembering the 20th Century and Diana
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries
Two of the biggest issues of the year are coming out this
Tuesday. Britain finally releases its five Princess Diana
stamps. Royal Mail anticipates a rush for these tributes;
None of the other major British Commonwealth countries
has issued Princess Diana stamps yet either.
For the past month, the U-S Postal Service has been
holding ceremonies around the country for each of the 30
"Celebrate the Century" stamps that will go on sale on
Tuesday. Half of them represent the first decade of the
20th Century, half the second decade. The subjects include
famous people and events, but also -- for the first time
on U-S stamps -- commercial products, like the Ford
Model T and Crayola Crayons.
Also Tuesday, you and I can begin voting on the subjects
for the 1950s stamps, and those could also contain some
very commercial subjects, like "I Love Lucy," and
Hula Hoops. You'll find a preview of the ballot on the
Internet, at www.delphi.com-slash-stamps.
And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
