Living People on U-S Stamps?

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries

The subjects for the 1950s Celebrate the Century stamps
will include Drive-In Movies, "I Love Lucy," and
Dr. Seuss.

The stamps are expected next year.

Now, the U-S has a rule about honoring living people on
stamps or those who died less than ten years ago. This
is causing a problem for the later decades in the series.
One of the subjects for the 1950s is "The Shot Heard
'Round the World," the home run that won the National
League pennant for the New York Giants.

"...they're going crazy (and under)" [The radio call of
the homer]

Bobby Thompson is still alive. How are you going to show
THAT on a stamp without showing a living person?

Postal Service stamps chief Azeezaly Jaffer says it
won't be the first time.

"The best example I can use is the "Man Landing on the
Moon" [stamp]. I don't think there's any question the
image of the man landing on the moon was Neil Armstrong
in that suit."

The 1920s stamps, by the way, are coming out May 28th
in Chicago.

And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
