No more summer doldrums.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Two or three decades ago, stamp collecting stopped during
the summer. It was too hot and sticky for stamps, and
there was too much else to do.

Now, with air conditioning much more common, philately is
year-round.

Last weekend, I attended the AMERICOVER first day cover
show in New Jersey. Two weeks earlier, the National
Topical Stamp Show was held near Washington. And at the
end of the month, the American Philatelic Society
convenes in Northern California at the aptly-named
STAMPSHOW.

And look at the U-S stamp schedule this year: Alfred
Hitchcock, Breast Cancer Research, Tropical Birds, and
Organ and Tissue Donations, all in the last couple of
weeks, with the 20-stamp American Art set scheduled
for STAMPSHOW.

The philatelic news hasn't stopped for the summer,
either. The Postal Service this past week announced
its nominees for the 1970s stamps, with voting to
start before Labor Day, and this week the agency will
announce the subjects for the 1930s.

And that's Stamp Collecting this week.

I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
