September 26-27, 1998:

National Stamp Collecting Month.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

That's October in most English-speaking countries, and it
means special stamps, usually aimed at young collectors,
issued this Wednesday. The U-S entry is a set of 5 Space
Discovery stamps that show a futuristic scene.

Canada's marking the month with four circus stamps, showing
clowns and other performers. New Australian stamps will
commemorate The Living Ocean.

You've got until Tuesday to vote for the stamp subjects you
think best represent the 1970s in the U-S. You can cast
your ballot via the Internet or by mail. Early results
show the Smiley Face and Sesame Street in the lead, but
ostal Service spokesman Don Smeraldi says that could change.

 RUNS=:10
"Children across the country in more than 250,000 classrooms
are learning all about these subjects, and their votes aren't
going to be tallied until the end of the month"

Sweden's first end-of-the-millenium stamps include one for
inventions, including ball bearings and the zipper.

And that's stamp collecting this week.

I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
