June 26-27:
Summertime.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries
It used to be that once the summer began, stamp collecting
stopped...but air conditioning changed that: The place where
you work on your stamps doesn't have to be hot and sticky --
conditions that aren't good for collections.
And there are now 3 major conventions in the summer, sponsored
by national organizations.
The first this year is the National Topical Stamp Show, by the
American Topical Association -- the people who collect stamps
by subject. That's for July 30th through August first in
Milwaukee. This is a special one, because the A-T-A is
celebrating its 50th anniversary, and the U-S will issue the
Billy Mitchell and Rio Grande stamps during the show.
Two weeks later, it's the American First Day Cover Society's
turn, for AMERICOVER, in Indianapolis. A first day cover is a
special envelope marking the issuance of a stamp.
And at the end of August, there's the American Philatelic
Society's STAMPSHOW, this year in Cleveland. The U-S will
issue its passenger train stamps then.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
