The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
This is National Stamp Collecting Month, and it began
Friday with the issuance of a 20-stamp set geared toward
young collectors: Bugs and Spiders.
In the past, the Postal Service has offered kids trading
cards through its Stampers program -- sort of like baseball
cards, but for stamp subjects, on which kids can paste new
stamps. That made many adult collectors wince. Now the
Postal Service says it will push more traditional forms of
collecting for children.
The Junior Philatelists of America -- the stamp organization
for kids -- is sponsoring a cachet contest that ends in about
a week. A cachet is the decoration on a philatelic envelope,
and the theme is any of the 15 Celebrate the Century stamps
for the 1960s. Those subjects include Roger Maris, the Moon
Walk, Star Trek and the Barbie Doll. You can find details
on the Internet at www-dot-delphi-dot-com-slash-stamps.
And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
