The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.


Far and away, the biggest was the importance of the 
Internet in stamp collecting, from simple communications 
to commerce -- especially the online auctions. It's 
believed that the Internet is bringing more collectors 
into the hobby, and putting more casual collectors in 
touch with organized philately.


The American Philatelic Society and other collectors told 
the U-S Postal Service they didn't like some of its 
policies -- and won! In one case, most commemorative stamps 
will now be sold in all parts of the country. In another, 
the U-S-P-S decided to allow more flexibility in the 
furniture used in some of the nation's biggest stamp shows.


The Postal Service also had to destroy an entire printing 
of Grand Canyon stamps, which said the natural wonder was in 
Colorado.


One of the rarest of U-S stamps, the Z Grill of 1868, was 
sold at auction for nearly a million dollars...and the 
winning bid was placed by an 11-year-old boy....for his 
father.
