Cheap Challenge.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Many of us start collecting stamps by keeping the interesting
ones that come on our mail. It's an inexpensive introduction
to the hobby.
However, many of the more interesting stamps that are being
issued don't make it into our mailboxes -- sometimes because
clerks just don't stock them...and sometimes because the
stamps are too hard to use.
That's the case with the Celebrate the Century stamps, ten
sheets of 15, the latest of which, for the 1980s, came out
this past week. The stamps are arranged in diagonal rows on
the sheets, and not as easy to break out as other stamps.
Finding good used copies of all 15 of the stamps in any of
the decade sets is a challenge. Stamp Collectors DO tend to
use new issues on their mail, but even letters you get from
collectors are likely to have only SOME of the subjects --
the ones they didn't want themselves.
Buying the stamps at the post office and mailing them back
to yourself is cheating! -- but exchanging letters with a
friend or relative isn't.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
